Jake Wightman continued his return from injury with second place in the mile at a meeting in Australia on Thursday.

The Scot has been hampered with a mix of foot, shin and hamstring injuries since winning the 1500m title at the World Championships in 2022.

He made his comeback at in indoor event in Boston earlier this month.

Wightman, 29, was narrowly beaten in Melbourne by Australian Stewart McSweyn, who won in three minutes and 52 seconds.

In addition to his surprise gold at the Worlds in Eugene, Oregon, Wightman also won a European silver and a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the same year.

But he decided not to defend his 1500m title in Budapest last year after suffering a stress fracture, instead prioritising his fitness for this summer's Olympic Games in Paris.
