Niemann beats Garcia on fourth play-off hole

Joaquin Niemann beat Sergio Garcia on a dramatic fourth play-off hole that took place in near darkness to win the LIV Golf Mayakoba title in Mexico.

The Chilean had the chance to win in regulation but missed a birdie putt at the 18th to send it to a play-off.

Both players hit par on the par-four 18th three times, before Niemann birdied at the fourth attempt.

"On the practice grounds I saw myself making that last putt to win, so it's freaking awesome," Niemann said.

The players had been offered the chance to play the fourth play-off hole on Monday, but both agreed to continue despite the rapidly fading light.

"At the first play-off hole I didn't think it was going to get too dark," Niemann added.

"I thought it was going to take a little bit [longer]. You never know what's going to happen, but I was expecting to go as fast as I could.

"I just told myself to give myself a chance and ended up hitting a good shot and making that putt, which was awesome."

Spain's Jon Rahm narrowly missed out on making it a three-way play-off on his Liv Golf debut after a bogey-bogey finish meant he finished third on 10-under, two shots behind Niemann and compatriot Garcia.

Another LIV debutant, England's Tyrell Hatton, finished tied for eighth on seven-under.

The newly formed team Legion XIII, comprising Hatton, Rahm, Zimbabwe's Kieran Vincent and American Caleb Surratt, took the team title on 24 under for the week - four shots ahead of Bryson DeChambeau's Crushers GC.
