NI 'built to adjust' as bug hits camp - Oxtoby

Northern Ireland manager Tanya Oxtoby says her squad has been dealing with a virus ahead of Friday's opening Euro 2025 qualifier with Malta.

Northern Ireland are aiming to reach back-to-back European Championships after qualifying for Euro 2022.

"We're built to adjust and the theme of the camp has been to pivot," Australian Oxtoby added.

"There are a few changes in and out, in terms of training and things like that, but we're finally coming good I think, so fingers crossed."

Striker Kerry Beattie has been forced out of Oxtoby's squad through injury and has been replaced by Glentoran team-mate Emily Wilson, while Athlone Town forward Casey Howe was absent from Thursday's open training session at Windsor Park.

Former England Under-21 international Connie Scofield, who qualifies for Northern Ireland through relatives from county Down, is available for selection after her internal clearance came through in time for the opening qualifier.

"Malta will be a really tough test for us, they are really dangerous in possession and they have some really dangerous players in terms of their movements," Oxtoby added.

"We are well aware of that and we need to be switched on for the full 90 minutes.

"It's the first game of a campaign, you are at home so you want to put in a really, really good performance.

"Like I said, I'd be really pleased to get the result given the challenges that we've had this week It will give us a good platform to move forward with."

'It will be a tough game'

Striker Simone Magill, who netted in the February's play-off victory over Montenegro, says Malta will be tough opposition at Windsor Park.

"It's a new campaign and every team is itching to get going and get off to a good start," the Aston Villa forward said.

"I've no doubt Malta will come out and give us a really tough game tomorrow night.

"The start of a campaign is crucial. It can really set you up. We know all about that in our success in getting there the last time.

"We know what got us there the last time won't get us there now, but full focus is on facing Malta. We won't get carried away or look too far ahead.

"If we can get off to a good start then we are sitting in a good position for the rest of the campaign."
